Real Red Colour Challenge 2

Hello and welcome back to this month’s Colour Challenge! April’s randomly selected colour was Real Red and we’ve already had Week 1 – the monochrome challenge. If you missed it, you can find it here.

Week 2 sees Real Red combined with Coastal Cabana and Old Olive. I decided to use the Stampin’ Up! Painted Poppies Stamp Set to create a scene, with the help of my trusty Sponge Brayers!

If you would prefer to watch me create the card, simply scroll to the end of this blog post where you can watch my video tutorial.

Let’s make it…

The card base is created from Basic Black cardstock. If you really don’t want a black card base I would recommend at least framing the card front with a layer of Basic Black – try it, you’ll be surprised how much difference it makes! I have then used a layer of Whisper White cardstock for the main card front.

I created a mask using a piece of scrap paper. I simply ripped the paper in order to create a ‘natural’ landscape type outline. Remember to keep both halves of the mask! I placed the bottom half of the mask over the card front and held in place using masking tape. The two images (single poppy and group of poppies) were then stamped in Memento Tuxedo Black ink.

With the mask still in place, and ensuring that the ink was dry, I used a sponge brayer to apply to Coastal Cabana ink in order to form the sky. I then swapped to the other half of the mask and created the grass using a sponge brayer and Old Olive ink.

Using a Journaling Pen, I outlined the shape of the grass such that the group of poppies appear to be beyond the ‘hill’ while the single poppy appears to be on top, in the foreground.

The poppies were coloured using one of the abstract in-fill stamps in Real Red ink. You could colour them using more traditional methods if you prefer a more realistic look.

The card front was adhered to the card base using Multipurpose Liquid Glue. I decided not to put a sentiment on the card as it has a ‘note card’ feel and can thus be used for any occasion – or ‘just because’.
